Mandatory traceability in livestock farming?

Producers have long been in favor of macanisms that identify the origin of each animal. We know that it is an international demand and that the requirement will arrive at our front door.

Nowadays, it is not enough to just produce sustainably, it is necessary to prove everything that producers do on the farm, especially for international buyers.

Discussions about bovine traceability, that is the exact identification of the origin of each animal, are gaining strength again. The Ministry of Agriculture created a working group to propose a strategic plan for the adoption of individual traceability of cattle.

Producers support traceability, as they know it is an international demand, but they do not agree with it being mandatory.

The biggest concern is with small producers and the cost that an obligation would generate. Topics such as land and environmental regularization need to advance along with traceability. Small producers from distant agricultural frontiers still have difficulty obtaining definitive title to their land.

Despite the challenges, there are different traceability programs being implemented, such as in the state of Pará, which plans to track its entire herd by 2026.

The immediate and mandatory implementation of traceability for all producers does not seem to be the most viable path, and hopes that dialogue and producer awareness will increasingly advance sustainable livestock farming.
